Nal’ibali is built on the simple logic that a well-established culture of reading can be a real game-changer for education in South Africa. Literacy skills are a strong predictor of future academic success in all subjects – and children who regularly read and hear engaging stories, in languages they understand, are well equipped and motivated to learn to read and write. A significant body of research reinforces the link between reading for pleasure and improved outcomes for children.

The campaign values the power of language and cultural relevance in literacy development. For reasons relating to empowerment, pedagogy, identity and democracy, Nal’ibali fully promotes reading and writing in mother tongue languages. All children and adults need to understand what they are listening to, or reading, for it to be meaningful and enjoyable – which is crucial for raising readers

Reading books and stories influences ones choices, it gives value to lives, it enhances critical and creative thinking and encourages personal development. Who are we?
The ECD Hub is developed by the people who bring you the beloved television and radio programme, Takalani Sesame. The ECD Hub is primarily driven by the contents of the South Africa’s draft National Curriculum Framework for Children Birth to Four which urges:
Respectful ways of working with children
Quality experiences for children
Equality of opportunities
Full potential of all children irrespective of their differences (family background, culture, home language, gender, giftedness, learning difficulties or disabilities)

What we do?
Takalani Sesame’s ECD Hub plans to become the early childhood development resource of choice in South Africa and across southern Africa.
We intend to present up-to-date scholarship and educational materials and fun activities to support the development of four areas: Literacy, Numeracy, Life Skills, and, Social and Emotional Development.
We hope to become a vehicle for the exchange of ideas, best practices, educational resources between early education practitioners and other professionals.

This International Literacy Day, Monday September 8, the Nal’ibali reading-for-enjoyment campaign has joined forces with Mxit Reach to launch a new and improved app to put children’s stories and literacy tips into the hands of even more South African caregivers and their children. The app is accessible via the Mxit social networking platform which now has five million monthly users. It will allow anyone with mobile handset – including feature phones which continue to dominate the market in SA – to help put their children on the path to educational success with access to regular stories, literacy tips and support.

The Encyclopedia on Early Childhood Development is a project from the Centre of Excellence for Early Childhood Development (CEECD) supported by Université Laval and Université de Montréal. Over the years, this organization has built a solid network of international experts who gather, synthesize and comment, in their respective domain of expertise, the most up-to-date scientific knowledge available on the development of young children, from conception to age five.
The Encyclopedia is intended for service providers, service planners, policy makers and parents.
Most topics are explored from three perspectives: development, services and policy and the papers gathered under each topic are written by internationally renowned experts.
The syntheses and information sheets (Eyes on...) provide summaries of the most essential knowledge in a lay language suited to various readers.
The Encyclopedia also features a section entitled Voices from the Field that focuses on a specific environment or region.
The Encyclopedia is a comprehensive, reliable and easy-to-use reference tool, a unique and free resource devoted to promoting accessibility and knowledge transfer of the best knowledge on early childhood development.
